Orlando Pirates Triumph Over Polokwane City

On April 5, 2025, Orlando Pirates secured a 1-0 win against Polokwane City in a Betway Premiership match at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. The crucial goal came in the 67th minute from Nkosinathi Sibisi, who capitalized on a mistake by the City goalkeeper.

The Sea Robbers snatched the crucial three points to reduce the gap established by Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the standings, bringing their total to 46 points after 20 matches, trailing the log leaders Sundowns by 12 points.

This was Pirates’ first match following the announcement that their coach Jose Reviero will depart from the team after the season concludes. He made minimal changes to the starting lineup that faced MC Alger in their first round Champions League quarter match in Algeria, introducing Patrick Maswanganyi and Mohau Nkota while leaving Tapelo Xoki and Deon Hotto on the bench. He subsequently introduced them in the second half to secure their one nil win.

Despite Pirates victory, Riveiro commented on the pitch conditions indicating a concern for playing on a pitch that may affect player performance and safety. “It is always an ugly game when you play at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. It cannot be the other way around; the shape of the field is terrible, slow, and bumpy. It is not a football ground, so you have to find a way not to concede and be patient by waiting for opportunities,” said Riveiro in a post-match interview with SuperSport TV.

The Bhakaniyas’ upcoming Betway Premiership match is scheduled for Sunday, 20 April 2025, at 17:30, after their Champions League second leg match against MC Alger on Wednesday, 9 April 2025, and their Nedbank Cup clash against Marumo Gallants on Sunday, 13 April 2025, both the matches to be played at Orlando Stadium..
