Durban City One Point Away from Glory After Tense Victory Over Black Leopards

There were jubilant scenes at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday afternoon as Durban City edged Black Leopards 3-2 in a dramatic NFD encounter, putting themselves within touching distance of automatic promotion to the topflight league.

The match, played at 15:00 on 11 May 2024, saw City fans erupt in celebration as their team dug deep to claim all three points in a tense and high-stakes contest. With this crucial victory, Durban City climbed to 55 points—three clear of Orbit College—meaning they now need just a single point in their final match to secure the Motsepe Foundation Championship (NFD) title and a return to top-tier football.

Durban City, formerly known as Maritzburg United, have travelled a difficult road since their relegation from the topflight league (formerly the DStv Premiership). Their fall from grace was compounded by their forced relocation from the Harry Gwala Stadium after the Msunduzi Municipality replaced them with Royal AM. Ironically, Royal AM have since been booted out of the PSL due to unresolved SARS issues.

Rather than folding, City chose to rebuild. Now based in Durban, the club has shown incredible resilience and determination. Their journey back to the summit of South African football is a story of perseverance—and it may soon have a fairytale ending.

Veteran attacker Amigo Gamaldien has played a key role in the team’s resurgence. Though age is not on his side, his experience and leadership have proven invaluable throughout the campaign. His presence on and off the field has been central to City’s strong run in the league.

Durban City now look ahead to a decisive fixture against Cape Town Spurs, set for Sunday, 18 May 2025 at Athlone Stadium. A draw will be enough to crown them champions and confirm their long-awaited return to the topflight.
