Gayton McKenzie Delivers on Promise to Bring VAR to the Betway Premiership

In a significant development for South African football, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has confirmed that the long-awaited introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to the Betway Premiership is finally on track. McKenzie, known for his direct approach and hands-on leadership, has fulfilled his promise to secure government funding for the project, allocating a substantial R90 million to implement VAR in the domestic league.

However, due to FIFA regulations that prohibit direct government interference in the running of football, McKenzie had to take a strategic detour. After securing the funding, the minister transferred full control of the VAR rollout to the South African Football Association (SAFA), the body officially recognised by FIFA to oversee football matters in the country.

FIFA don’t want the department to do it. They want SAFA to do it. So, the R90 million is there!” McKenzie said. “We went to Spain with the help from SuperSport, we tested VAR. It works 100%! Now we are waiting for SAFA to announce the company that has won the tender to do VAR.

The tender process is currently underway, with the implementation of VAR now resting squarely in SAFA’s hands. According to McKenzie, the process has been transparent and open to the public, with companies invited to bid for the project.

This move comes after growing frustration from fans, coaches, and players over the lack of technological assistance in officiating key moments during matches in the Betway Premiership. The introduction of VAR is expected to enhance fairness, reduce officiating errors, and bring the South African league closer in line with international standards.

McKenzie made it clear that his role in the project is now complete. Responding to persistent questions about the status of VAR, he firmly stated:
“There’s nothing more I can do. I have released the money.”

The focus now shifts to SAFA, who will be responsible for finalising the tender process and overseeing the rollout of VAR across Premier Soccer League (PSL) venues. The football community awaits SAFA’s announcement on the winning bidder and the official timeline for implementation.

This milestone marks a turning point in South African football, with McKenzie delivering on a major promise. All eyes are now on SAFA to ensure that the vision becomes reality.
