Kaizer Chiefs & Orlando Pirates Appear Before The PSL Disciplinary Committee

Due to spectator misbehavior, the Soweto Giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates appeared before the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee (DC) on Thursday, 20 February 2025. The PSL DC, under the leadership of Advocate Zola Majavu, the PSL Prosecutor, explained which matches the two Soweto Giants were charged with.

“For the sake of clarity, Kaizer Chiefs was charged as a result of the incident arising from the (Soweto) Derby on the 1st of February (2025); (and) Orlando Pirates was charged as a result of the fixture with Mamelodi Sundowns on the 8th of February (2025).” Said Majavu.

Chiefs, also known as Amakhosi, were penalized with a fine of R100,000.00, with half of this amount suspended for twelve months, provided they do not commit the same offence during the suspension period.

“Sadly and unfortunately, in October last year (2024); Kaizer Chiefs appeared before the PSL DC facing the same charges in respect of which they were fined an amount of R200,000.00; R100,000.00 was suspended on condition that they do not reoffend for the duration of the period of suspension,” said the PSL Prosecutor. “Now that they have reoffended and being convicted accordingly, it means that the suspended R100, 000.00 is triggered and payable immediately. In total it means Kaizer Chiefs will pay an amount of R150, 000.00 plus the protractor costs of today’s seating.” Concluded Majavu.

Orlando Pirates were also penalized, but with R25,000.00 less than the penalties imposed on the Chiefs. “They (Pirates) were fined an amount of R100, 000.00 of which R25, 000.00 is suspended for twelve months on the same condition that they are not to reoffend during the period of suspension.” Explain Majavu. “Because they too appeared before the PSL DC, in November last year (2024) facing the same charges where they were fined an amount of R100, 000.00 of which R50, 000. 00 was suspended, now that they have reoffended and have been convicted as such; the R50, 000.00 that was suspended is triggered and payable immediately and in respect of the new offence they were fined another R100, 000.00 of which R25, 000.00 was suspended and R75, 000.00 is payable immediate. In total it means Orlando Pirates will have to pay R125, 000.00.” Advocate concluded.

Both teams are anticipated to split the seating expenses since they both appeared before the PSL Disciplinary Committee on the same day and admitted guilt at the same location that day as well, in an effort to lessen the financial burden that the teams will face due to their fans’ misconduct. They were also commanded to post the sanctions on their respective websites within seven days from the date of discipline.

“This will also send the message to their respective fans that this type of behavior only serve to punish the clubs and not the perpetrators themselves.” Said Majavu.
