Lekgwathi Marks His Birthday With Flair
On August 1, 1976, Lucky Lekgwathi, the legendary Orlando Pirates player, was born. He marked his 48th birthday at The Reef Hotel in Johannesburg on August 16, 2024, celebrating with his friends and other soccer legends.
Edward ‘Magents’ Motale, William Okpara, Tebogo Moloi, and Thapelo Liau, along with Thandani Ntshumayelo and other legends, attended Phindamzala’s birthday celebration. Each of these legends had the opportunity to share their thoughts on their friend Lucky Lekgwathi.

The funny Magents reminisced about his time playing with Lucky, who was his teammate at Ria Stars FC in Polokwane. After Magents moved to play for Orlando Pirates, Lucky followed suit. Magents urged South Africans to honor and celebrate their heroes while they are still alive, highlighting Lucky’s brand, Fantastic 14, and encouraging support for his business. Finally, he emphasized the importance of celebrating legends in their lifetime rather than showing up at their funerals to make noise and give empty tributes.

Everyone who honored his invitation received thanks from the birthday boy. Phindamzala expressed his gratitude for the attendees and acknowledged the praise from coach (Tebogo) Moloi, describing himself as the greatest player of all time. Reflecting on the July 2019 unrest, he shared that his shop was looted but was able to reopen thanks to the generous donations of his fans, totaling more than 150 thousand rands. He concluded by emphasizing the significance of everyone’s presence at the event.
Lucky Lekgwathi has been hailed as the finest captain in the history of Orlando Pirates, earning him the nickname Captain Fantastic. This recognition is a result of his achievement in lifting more Premier Soccer League cups than any other captain in the South African top flight, including a double treble.
