Mamelodi Sundowns Clinch Betway Premiership Title with One Match to Spare
Mamelodi Sundowns have once again stamped their dominance in South African football, clinching the inaugural Betway Premiership title with one game remaining in the 2024/25 season. The Brazilians sealed their triumph in emphatic fashion with a 3-0 victory over Chippa United on Wednesday evening, 14 May 2025, at Buffalo Stadium in the Eastern Cape.
This latest league triumph marks a historic milestone for Sundowns as they claim their 15th top-flight title and an unprecedented eighth consecutive championship—a record that solidifies their status as the powerhouse of South African football. From the total of seven titles that had been won previously—three were during the ABSA era and four in the DStv Premiership era.

Under the guidance of head coach Miguel Cardoso, Sundowns have maintained consistent excellence throughout the campaign. After their dominant display against Chippa United, Cardoso lauded his team’s dedication and discipline:
“I’m incredibly proud of the boys. To secure the title with a game to go shows the hard work and hunger they have displayed all season. Now we can manage our squad better for the big challenges ahead,” said Cardoso.
Currently sitting on 70 points, Sundowns will look to close off their season in style when they host their final league game at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, 18 May 2025 against Magesi FC, at 17h30. A win would see them finish on 73 points, far ahead of their nearest rivals, Orlando Pirates, who are second on 55 points with four matches still to play.
With the title already wrapped up, the timing could not be better for the Tshwane giants. They are set to face Pyramids FC of Egypt in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final on Saturday, 24 May 2025. Having already secured domestic glory, Sundowns now have the luxury of resting key players this weekend to prepare for the continental showdown.
As the curtain nears its close on another dominant domestic campaign, Mamelodi Sundowns have once again shown why they are the standard-bearers of South African football. Their focus now turns to conquering the continent—fueled by confidence, momentum, and the legacy of champions.
