Simba SC Edge Stellenbosch in Controversial Yet Thrilling CAF Confederation Cup Semi-Final First Leg

Dar es Salaam – Tanzanian giants Simba SC took a slender advantage in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final tie, defeating South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC 1-0 in a thrilling first leg encounter at a packed Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. The hosts secured the win courtesy of a goal in first-half stoppage time, a strike clouded in controversy but ultimately upheld by VAR.

The decisive moment came deep into added time at the end of the first half. Simba’s Jean Ahoua launched a last minute freekick towards halftime that sliced through the Stellenbosch backline, culminating in a close-range finish that was initially met with raised flags from the assistant referee. The goal, however, was sent to VAR for review, and to the dismay of the visitors, the decision was overturned and the goal stood, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters.

Replays suggested the call was marginal, and while Stellenbosch FC protested, the goal was given, giving Simba SC the edge heading into the second leg.

Despite the low scoreline, the match was anything but dull. Both teams played attacking football, with waves of chances created at either end. Stellenbosch showed great ambition on the road, pressing high and looking for openings, while Simba were dangerous in transition and made full use of the home advantage.

The match showcased two goalkeepers at the top of their game. Oscarine Masuluke, stepping in for Stellenbosch captain Sage Stephens who started on the bench, was outstanding. The acrobatic shot-stopper pulled off several incredible saves that kept the visitors within touching distance, most notably denying Simba a second goal in the dying minutes with a point-blank block.

Simba’s keeper was equally impressive, reacting well to deny Stellenbosch efforts from both range and close quarters, helping the Tanzanian outfit maintain their narrow lead.

Adding an intriguing subplot to the match, Simba SC’s head coach Fadlu Davids– a South African by birth – found himself up against a team from his homeland. But there were no favours given on the day. The coach stayed true to his mission and led Simba to a crucial first-leg win, showing no sentimentality as he marshalled his side to a professional and disciplined performance.

With just a single goal separating the sides, the tie remains wide open heading into the return leg in South Africa, Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium. Stellenbosch FC will be confident that, with the backing of their home crowd and a strong performance, they can overturn the deficit. But Simba SC, with their experience and momentum, will look to complete the job and book their place in the Confederation Cup final.
