The New Peter Mokaba Stadium Is Not ready To Host The Betway Premiership Matches
South African soccer teams face the issue of not owning their stadiums, which poses a challenge as they share venues with music artists (festivals), churches, and more. On Wednesday, 25 December 2024, the Polokwane Municipality announced that the matches set to occur at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium have been moved to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
This follows the damage to the New Peter Mokaba Stadium that occurred after an event held there by the renowned Limpopo award-winning singer Makhadzi’s One Woman Show on Saturday, 21 December 2024. The occasion, which drew a roaring audience of thousands, not only featured her musical abilities but also emphasized her rise from modest origins to becoming a staple in South Africa’s dynamic entertainment industry.
Regrettably, the damage has compelled the municipality to reach an agreement with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to relocate two forthcoming matches featuring Sekhukhune United vs Marumo Gallants and Magesi FC vs Orlando Pirates on Saturday, 28 December 2024 at 17:45 and Sunday, 29 December 2024 at 15:30 respectively.
The Executive Mayor of Limpopo, Cllr Makoro John Mpe, stated on Thobela FM that the stadium requires a minimum of three to four weeks to be prepared. Click the link below to listen to his interview:
